Is Change Good?

I have been typing away this story, that I apparently know so well, for some weeks now.
The good news is that I have got her to the city gates. The bad news is that I have written it differently.
I did not know that I had. The words seemed to be flowing in a way that makes you believe what you are writing is good and right.
But then I look back at my notes.
And I've changed a lot.
There were a lot of words about her journey here, I let you know how long she had been away and gave you an insight into her reasons for coming back.

And she gets there quickly.
And without event just wandering her way back home until she is standing by the gates of her home city.
And it is deserted.
I've changed it without knowing. As now she arrives to a crowd of people trying to get within the city walls to shelter for the night.
I am justifying my changes that at night, in those times, the city gates would not be left upon and unguarded; but there is a beauty in her arriving alone and unnoticed.
So where do I go if I like both versions of my tale? Which one is right when they both feel so correct?
These are the days when I realise that writing is a difficult task. The words may flow, and the pages may fill with ideas, but I have to be my own greatest critic.
She does not tell this tale though it is hers. She is my creation and looking to me for direction and substance.
So, for the moment I leave the new draft in place and hope that the. story grows around this altered moment.
